The novel begins with Robert Langdon being invited by his friend Peter Solomon, secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and the scion of an aristocratic American family, to deliver a speech at the U.S. Capitol.
Solomon has been kidnapped, and his kidnapper has brought Langon Washington to draw him to find the treasure of the Freemasons
